IN A LITTLE district west of Washington Square the streets have run crazy and broken themselves into small strips called “places.” These “places” make strange angles and curves. One street crosses itself a time or two. An artist once discovered a valuable possibility in this street. Suppose a collector with a bill for paints, paper and canvas should, in traversing this route, suddenly meet himself coming back, without a cent having been paid on account! So, to quaint old Greenwich Village the art people soon came prowling, hunting for north windows and eighteenth-century gables and Dutch attics and low rents. Then they imported some pewter mugs and a chafing dish or two from Sixth avenue, and became a “colony.”At the top of a squatty, three-story brick Sue and Johnsy had their studio. “Johnsy” was familiar for Joanna. One was from Maine; the other from California. They had met at the table d’hote of an Eighth street “Delmonico’s,” and found their tastes in art, chicory salad and bishop sleeves so congenial that the joint studio resulted. That was in May. In November a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called Pneumonia, stalked about the colony, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Over on the east side this ravager strode boldly, smiting his victims by scores, but his feet trod slowly through the maze of the narrow and moss-grown “places.”Mr. Pneumonia was not what you would call a chivalric old gentleman. A mite of a little woman with blood thinned by California zephyrs was hardly fair game for the red-fisted, short-breathed old duffer. But Johnsy he smote; and she lay, scarcely moving, on her painted iron bedstead, looking through the small Dutch window-panes at the blank side of the next brick house. One morning the busy doctor invited Sue into the hallway with a shaggy, gray eyebrow.“She has one chance in—let us say, ten,” he said, as he shook down the mercury in his clinical thermometer. “And that chance is for her to want to live. This way people have of lining-up on the side of the undertaker makes the entire pharmacopeia look silly. Your little lady has made up her mind that she’s not going to get well. Has she anything on her mind?”“She—she wanted to paint the Bay of Naples some day,” said Sue.“Paint?—bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking about twice—a man, for instance?”“A man?” said Sue, with a jew’s-harp twang in her voice. “Is a man worth—but, no, doctor; there is nothing of the kind.”“Well, it is the weakness, then,” said the doctor. “I will do all that science, so far as it may filter through my efforts, can accomplish. But whenever my patient begins to count the carriages in her funeral procession I subtract 50 per cent. from the curative power of medicines. If you will get her to ask one question about the new winter styles in cloak sleeves I will promise you a one-in-five chance for her, instead of one in ten.”After the doctor had gone Sue went into the workroom and cried a Japanese napkin to a pulp. Then she swaggered into Johnsy’s room with her drawing board, whistling ragtime.Johnsy lay, scarcely making a ripple under the bedclothes, with her face toward the window. Sue stopped whistling, thinking she was asleep. She arranged her board and began a pen-and-ink drawing to illustrate a magazine story. Young artists must pave their way to Art by drawing pictures for magazine stories that young authors write to pave their way to Literature. As Sue was sketching a pair of elegant horseshow riding trousers and a monocle on the figure of the hero, an Idaho cowboy, she heard a low sound, several times repeated. She went quickly to the bedside.Johnsy’s eyes were open wide. She was looking out the window and counting—counting backward.“Twelve,” she said, and a little later “eleven”; and then “ten,” and “nine”; and then “eight” and “seven,” almost together.Sue looked solicitously out the window. What was there to count? There was only a bare, dreary yard to be seen, and the blank side of the brick house twenty feet away. An old, old ivy vine, gnarled and decayed at the roots, climbed half way up the brick wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken its leaves from the vine until its skeleton branches clung, almost bare, to the crumbling bricks.“What is it, dear?” asked Sue.“Six,” said Johnsy, in almost a whisper. “They’re falling faster now. Three days ago there were almost a hundred. It made my head ache to count them. But now it’s easy. There goes another one. There are only five left now.”“Five what, dear? Tell your Sudie.”“Leaves. On the ivy vine. When the last one falls I must go, too. I’ve known that for three days. Didn’t the doctor tell you?”“Oh, I never heard of such nonsense,” complained Sue, with magnificent scorn. “What have old ivy leaves to do with your getting well? And you used to love that vine so, you naughty girl. Don’t be a goosey. Why, the doctor told me this morning that your chances for getting well real soon were—let’s see exactly what he said—he said the chances were ten to one! Why, that’s almost as good a chance as we have in New York when we ride on the street cars or walk past a new building. Try to take some broth now, and let Sudie go back to her drawing, so she can sell the editor man with it, and buy port wine for her sick child, and pork chops for her greedy self.”“You needn’t get any more wine,” said Johnsy, keeping her eyes fixed out the window. “There goes another. No, I don’t want any broth. That leaves just four. I want to see the last one fall before it gets dark. Then I’ll go, too.”“Johnsy, dear,” said Sue, bending over her, “will you promise me to keep your eyes closed, and not look out the window until I am done working? I must hand those drawings in by tomorrow. I need the light, or I would draw the shade down.”“Couldn’t you draw in the other room?” asked Johnsy, coldly.“I’d rather be here by you,” said Sue. “Besides, I don’t want you to keep looking at those silly ivy leaves.”“Tell me as soon as you have finished,” said Johnsy, closing her eyes, and lying white and still as a fallen statue, “because I want to see the last one fall. I’m tired of waiting. I’m tired of thinking. I want to turn loose my hold on everything, and go sailing down, down, just like one of those poor, tired leaves.”“Try to sleep,” said Sue. “I must call Behrman up to be my model for the old hermit miner. I’ll not be gone a minute. Don’t try to move ’till I come back.”Old Behrman was a painter who lived on the ground floor beneath them. He was past sixty and had a Michael Angelo’s Moses beard curling down from the head of a satyr along the body of an imp. Behrman was a failure in art. Forty years he had wielded the brush without getting near enough to touch the hem of his Mistress’s robe. He had been always about to paint a masterpiece, but had never yet begun it. For several years he had painted nothing except now and then a daub in the line of commerce or advertising. He earned a little by serving as a model to those young artists in the colony who could not pay the price of a professional. He drank gin to excess, and still talked of his coming masterpiece. For the rest he was a fierce little old man, who scoffed terribly at softness in any one, and who regarded himself as especial mastiff-in-waiting to protect the two young artists in the studio above.Sue found Behrman smelling strongly of juniper berries in his dimly lighted den below. In one corner was a blank canvas on an easel that had been waiting there for twenty-five years to receive the first line of the masterpiece. She told him of Johnsy’s fancy, and how she feared she would, indeed, light and fragile as a leaf herself, float away when her slight hold upon the world grew weaker.Old Behrman, with his red eyes plainly streaming, shouted his contempt and derision for such idiotic imaginings.“Vass!” he cried. “Is dere people in de world mit der foolishness to die because leafs dey drop off from a confounded vine? I haf not heard of such a thing. No, I will not bose as a model for your fool hermit-dunderhead. Vy do you allow dot silly pusiness to come in der prain of her? Ach, dot poor leetle Miss Yohnsy.”“She is very ill and weak,” said Sue, “and the fever has left her mind morbid and full of strange fancies. Very well, Mr. Behrman, if you do not care to pose for me, you needn’t. But I think you are a horrid old—old flibbertigibbet.”“You are just like a woman!” yelled Behrman. “Who said I will not bose? Go on. I come mit you. For half an hour I haf peen trying to say dot I am ready to bose. Gott! dis is not any blace in which one so goot as Miss Yohnsy shall lie sick. Some day I vill baint a masterpiece, and ve shall all go away. Gott! yes.”Johnsy was sleeping when they went upstairs. Sue pulled the shade down to the window-sill, and motioned Behrman into the other room. In there they peered out the window fearfully at the ivy vine. Then they looked at each other for a moment without speaking. A persistent, cold rain was falling, mingled with snow. Behrman, in his old blue shirt, took his seat as the hermit miner on an upturned kettle for a rock. When Sue awoke from an hour’s sleep the next morning she found Johnsy with dull, wide-open eyes staring at the drawn green shade.“Pull it up; I want to see,” she ordered, in a whisper.Wearily Sue obeyed. But, lo! after the beating rain and fierce gusts of wind that had endured through the livelong night, there yet stood out against the brick wall one ivy leaf. It was the last on the vine. Still dark green near its stem, but with its serrated edges tinted with the yellow of dissolution and decay, it hung bravely from a branch some twenty feet above the ground.“It is the last one,” said Johnsy. “I thought it would surely fall during the night. I heard the wind. It will fall to-day, and I shall die at the same time.”“Dear, dear!” said Sue, leaning her worn face down to the pillow, “think of me, if you won’t think of yourself. What would I do?”But Johnsy did not answer. The lonesomest thing in all the world is a soul when it is making ready to go on its mysterious, far journey. The fancy seemed to possess her more strongly as one by one the ties that bound her to friendship and to earth were loosed. The day wore away, and even through the twilight they could see the lone ivy leaf clinging to its stem against the wall. And then, with the coming of the night the north wind was again loosed, while the rain still beat against the windows and pattered down from the low Dutch eaves. When it was light enough Johnsy, the merciless, commanded that the shade be raised. The ivy leaf was still there.Johnsy lay for a long time looking at it. And then she called to Sue, who was stirring her chicken broth over the gas stove.“I’ve been a bad girl, Sudie,” said Johnsy. “Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is a sin to want to die. You may bring me a little broth now, and some milk with a little port in it, and—no; bring me a hand-mirror first, and then pack some pillows about me, and I will sit up and watch you cook.”An hour later she said:“Sudie, some day I hope to paint the Bay of Naples.”The doctor came in the afternoon, and Sue had an excuse to go into the hallway as he left.“Even chances,” said the doctor, taking Sue’s thin, shaking hand in his. “With good nursing you’ll win. And now I must see another case I have downstairs. Behrman, his name is—some kind of an artist, I believe. Pneumonia, too. He is an old, weak man, and the attack is acute. There is no hope for him; but he goes to the hospital to-day to be made more comfortable.”The next day the doctor said to Sue: “She’s out of danger. You’ve won. Nutrition and care now—that’s all.”And that afternoon Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay, contentedly knitting a very blue and very useless woolen shoulder scarf, and put one arm around her, pillows and all.“I have something to tell you, white mouse,” she said. “Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia to-day in the hospital. He was ill only two days. The janitor found him on the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and a ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors mixed on it, and—look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece—he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”Story by–O Henry.

The Masefield Way To Survive!
The purpose of explaining this poem albeit through my interpretation becomes even more vital when all hope seems lost in this raging Covid-19 pandemic.
Happy reading and remember to laugh and be merry like John Masefield had asked of us.
Laugh and be merry, remember, better the world with a song,
Better the world with a blow in the teeth of a wrong.
Laugh, for the time is brief, a thread the length of a span.
Laugh and be proud to belong to the old proud pageant of man.
The poet asks us to be cheerful and be joyous for the world is better with songs instead of sighs. The world is better with shunning the wrongs of the world. The poet asks us to laugh for the time is brief and our time is like short like a thread. The poet asks us to laugh and be proud to belong to the mystical miracle that is mankind.
Laugh and be merry: remember, in olden time.
God made Heaven and Earth for joy He took in a rhyme,
Made them, and filled them full with the strong red wine of
His mirth
The splendid joy of the stars: the joy of the earth.
The poet asks us to laugh and be happy and remember that God had made heaven and Earth to abound in joy. God as if joyous to music tried to replicate the rhyme by making mankind and filled them with red wine, symbolic of the Christian notion of life and blood. He filled mankind with his happiness, the joy of the stars and the joy of the Earth.
So we must laugh and drink from the deep blue cup of the sky,
Join the jubilant song of the great stars sweeping by,
Laugh, and battle, and work, and drink of the wine outpoured
In the dear green earth, the sign of the joy of the Lord.
So the poet says that as God as meticulously made humans with so much effort we must laugh and cherish our moments on Earth represented by drinking from the deep blue cup of the sky. We must join in the celebration and songs of the great shooting stars. We must live our lives to the fullest by being happy, battling and working our way against odds and cherish the life given to us like the red wine. The poet says that our Earth is dear for it is proof and symbol of the bountiful joy of God.
Laugh and be merry together, like brothers akin,
Guesting awhile in the rooms of a beautiful inn,
Glad till the dancing stops, and the lilt of the music ends.
Laugh till the game is played; and be you merry, my friends.
The poet repeats himself by asking us to laugh and sway with joy. We must live together in peace and harmony like brothers and like guests in the beautiful inn that is the Earth. We must be glad till the dancing stops and the music ends, which means we must never take life for granted and cherish it till it lasts and laugh joyously till the game of life draws to a close.
The harsh move of nature – tsunamis and earthquake
Do you know that the 2004 Tsunami had killed over 225 thousand people in 14 different countries? It’s so sad to hear, but that’s the reality when such a natural calamity appears in, and there’s no way to stop it unless if predicted in advance. The tsunami on the day of Christmas 2004 had a significant impact on the people, and the news media coverage correspondents were in shock. It did happen all of a sudden, with a maximum rise of water up to 100 feet.
On the other hand, the most massive scale on record for earthquakes recorded in Chile with a magnitude of 9.5. If there is any similar incident with a higher range of 11.0 ever happens, the Earth may split into two halves. Now the 2004 event was complemented with an earthquake of 9.1 magnitudes on the western coast in Sumatra, Indonesia. These bring tears to eyes when we hear the survival stories; how they manage to get out in such a situation is a courageous task.

Why do these incidents happen, and how does it originate? In short, the water present in the ocean is ultimately linked to the bottom of the Earth, to be precise, the mantle where the plate boundaries are also present. When there is a vigorous movement of water, this leads to magma production, continental crust formation, several mineral resources but also an earthquake.
Most of the researches was on the Ring of Fire mentioned in my earlier post. This area is in the Pacific Ocean. But, findings by the University of Bristol keep concerns on the Atlantic plate and the eastern sides of the Caribbean Sea. These will help us to know how it works and how it leads to an earthquake. Scientists gathered data from two marine cruise ships, which recorded the seismic activities on the temporary station with the necessary information of the rock samples etc.
To know the role of the water in a subduction zone (an area where tectonic plates intermixes with one plate and sinks), they did a study on the composition of Boron element and found that serpentine, a mineral rock supplies water to the central regions in the Caribbean Sea as mentioned earlier.

If such an incident takes place soon, are we prepared for the same? I hope it doesn’t happen, but an estimate says that almost everyone in this world has no proper disaster management plan. The problem is that people immediately panic and take wrong steps leading to their death. For example, you should know the fire exits of the premises in which you currently live. Around 50 earthquakes are happening around the world, all of them are not noticeable, but the major ones create loss to human lives and destruction of several infrastructures, historical monuments, etc.
It would be best if you always kept a list of emergency contacts in a diary or somewhere saved on your smartphones. Now the devices are much smarter; even most of the device manufacturers do include the SOS panic button so that you get help immediately. Be prepared for the worst, and stay safe.
DOOMSURFING
First of all , we need to understand what is “doomsurfing”. Doomsurfing is a a newly discovered lexicon, which has been quite trendy in the news articles and social media accounts during this pandemic time. Doomsurfing is basically a tendency to continuously keep scrolling or surfing through bad news, without having much control over themselves to step back/stop. Despite of showing disheartening and depressing content, user’s keep on surfing. This term was first used by someone in twitter where it gained popularity two years back, in October 2018.
Another term which have been gaining rounds is “Doomscrolling”. It is referred to as the overuse of screen time , in absorption of depressing news. This news was recently mentioned by Los Angeles Times in their article about how Covid-19 have given rise to new lexicons. Doom means evil, or dark. Eventually , it is referred to as someone’s fate, the kind where we’ll are headed to in our future. Surfing, on the other hand is referred to as the term used for browsing the internet. It has become so popular that Merriam Webster have kept these two terms in their watchlist ,as they’re yet to clear the criteria. These were the most searched terms on the internet globally.
It’s human tendency to pay more attention to negative news, over positive news. You might not be the only ones who ‘ve become night–owls, there are many people like us who surf the internet for every minute detail possible about the news. We’re making ourselves fall into deep, manmade rabbit holes, filled with coronavirus tention .This results in agitating ourselves to a extent that we loose our peace of mind, and the comfort of night-sleep. This pandemic have led a lot of people including me , to think that we’ve literally got hold of the disease due to overthinking .We keep on scrolling because it’s human tendency to prioritize bad news .It has been successful in creating illusion like situation.
It had been proved in the 2019 study that Doomscrolling effects may not necessarily be bad.For people who are phone addicts, social media could prove to be a great chance to overcome their weakness by communicating. While , on the other hand people who are poor at communicating by the medium of social media platform may be in a state of stress, anxiety. The way we comprehend the information depends upon our mental state.
Over this short span of time, there has been constant stream of media whether it is for Covid-19 ,protest over racial discrimination or talks about India’s relation with China and Nepal , the list has been never-ending. However, we can eventually get over these by bringing small changes in our lives. If we restrict ourselves and makes schedules for surfing like twice a day, our lifestyle can get back on track. After having read the information online, we should find ways to exchange those news with our peer groups and family, in order to get hold of their viewpoint on such issues. We should try and switch over to offline modes of entertainment like television, reading books, spending quality time with nature, etc.
Our double faces..!!
Can you believe this…on the launch day of OnePlus 8 pro, within minutes it was sold here in India. One side people are protesting over the issue of boycott of China products on the other hand we have people like “aag lagi hai basti mein hum hamari masti mein.” Just for their amateur interest…indeed ‘shaukh badi cheez hai’ Purchasing the phone and showing off just for the sake of status and as a result scamming our own country. Despite of having wars from China both on internet and physically, people are having their own swag level. People show much of patriotism online, like making hashtags trendy, hate comments towards China, posting protests towards China but in real life it doesn’t matter to them at all.
Action speaks louder than words ever heard this tagline? These kinda lines are made for such people who just to be in trend posts online but when it comes to follow…they give up! OnePlus stated that this phone has huge demand in India as its features are uptdated plus supports 5g. When it was about Carryminati, people took over the sensation at peak and together atleast for once they made Tiktok’s rating to 1. When we can make up together just for one youtuber(No hate, even I am his fan) why not for the whole nation!? When a known shopkeeper defame you then you will have conflicts with him forever then this is our nation, our India why not over this. Out of poll conducted it came out that out of 10, 4 are ready to boycott china whereas 6 still are in favour. Choice still is in our hand and its not too late working on it unless you will be leftout with no choice.
In the dispute of India and China 20 Soldiers were killed by them while their 40+ soldiers were killed by our soldiers. Such unsympathetic country China is..! Not because our soldiers were killed, that is for sure a reason but also includes the virus which is their contribution towards whole world. And other deadly virus available online are different; Tiktok, pubg, vigo video, beauty plus etc., These are viruses which are killing people slowly, acting as slow poison. They took over whole world under them and almost 70% of products here in India are China’s products.
People showing hate online over the trendy hashtags like destroying their products, protesting, using vulgar languages over internet etc., Then let me tell you nothing will help as you already purchased those products and the profit has already earned by them then this is straight forwardly your own loss. If you truly want to help then stop purchasing new products, seriously boycott this online and offline both. Don’t do this just to be in trend, this is no fun!! Protesting over boycott of China then you must follow as well, just for the sake of public praising and earning some fame over doesn’t define your petriotism. Surely youths have no patriotism towards their country, busy playing pubg…huhh! Using vulgar language then this will not affect them in the first place..who can kill animals for feeding themselves then nothing is expected from their side.
Lastly join hands towards our nation as this is feeding you, born in this country and it gave place to live, then live for this country. Everything is going in the hands of China which is doing nothing but killing through viruses both online and offline.
Truly stand towards #botcottChina..not to be in trend but show that you genuinely mean!!
DREAMCATCHER

The small circle is her life problems spins off tight,
society dispirited of what she is,
she observed the way , a life of positive ray,
A firefly came through the spin circle ,
Gave her lights and touched her soul,
glory of her life started with desire
Chasing up the firefly
in different ways in which the zazzy feathers cry
and so here dream started as an ambition to catch the firefly!
Say no to Chinese
There is a campaign for boycott of Chinese goods in the country. The Indian scenario has changed in order to break all shared ties with China, which has been supporting Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Such an incident is being seen on social sites. India is a major center for Chinese goods, as Chinese goods are cheaper.
The trade of Chinese goods in the country is so extensive that in the first few weeks before the festival, only in Delhi, products worth 1000 crores have been sold. As a member of the WTO, India needs to import Chinese goods. The trade partnership between China and India is 4.6 lakh crores, and China is India’s largest trading partner. For this reason, India may face difficulties in ending trade partnership with China.
The process of manufacture of indigenous goods in India has become somewhat blunt. India imports 7 times more goods from China than exports. India imports 32.02 per cent of electronic, 17.01 per cent of nuclear reactors, boilers and parts, organic chemicals 9.83 per cent foliators. Agriculture and today’s important part of human mobile When we are forced to import from China, then it does not seem appropriate to stop trading with China.
Mahatma Gandhi had said that we need to be free from the use of foreign goods, but he also said that this will happen only when we make our own things. When foreign investment is also happening in Modi’s ambitious plan ‘Make in India’, then the boycott issue seems inadequate. Only we can beat China against its durability. We cannot run a boycott campaign only because of the use of Chinese skirting and firecrackers during the festive season.
India currently buys iron and steel 5.82 percent, plastics and articles 2.74 percent, photography equipment 2.09 percent, bots 2.05 percent, iron and steel articles 1.92 percent and 1.81 percent parts of vehicles other than railways from China. India imports almost all the parts of the past few years from cosmetics, defense equipment to travel facilities like rail, motor vehicles, etc., then it makes sense to talk about the import of Chinese goods. To what extent the boycott of Chinese goods can be justified when the country’s infrastructure agriculture is still with China’s equipment and fetters.
China has become a manufacturing hub for the world’s big brands, not just for India. Most of the equipment of well-known companies is manufactured from China. Due to the price of sugar products being cheap, many producers in India are currently becoming traders only and only. Actually the problem is that at the lower price that a product is made in India, it comes to the market with the tag of ‘Make in China’ at a lower price. If we talk about the economy of every country is not equal. The wheel of economy keeps spinning. If we look at it, we will know that in the 1960s and 70s, Japan had established its dominance over the world market. After this, 80s belonged to Korea. He doubled by day, progressed by night and became a market for the world.
After this, China has not only captured the whole of South Asia, and is selling its goods. Now if India is ready to respond to China with Pakistan, then it will have to evict China from its position, for this India will have to increase its production area. China’s goods are weak in the area of quality and durability, India can make a place by doing good work in this area. If we talk about long-term quality goods, then the name of Germany will come up. There is no match for German machinery yet. Although China has made a place in the world market by making cheap goods, but it is far behind in terms of quality. India should pay attention to this.
India cannot boycott Chinese goods because trade is not based on sentiments, but is dependent on cheap products and profits. In the global era, it is not possible for any country to ban the product of any other country. In the last year itself, the Modi government has signed a US $ 10 billion trade agreement with China. According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, India is dependent on China for 90 percent of the raw materials of India’s pharmaceutical industry. The kind of radical nationalism that India is talking of breaking trade relations with China, China can also do it for its own benefit. India must first increase its productivity, so that China can be equaled. As long as India remains dependent on China for the basic and absolutely necessary things for the country’s system. India cannot stop the entire trade by banning the goods of Deepawali Welters, Crackers. If China wants to punish Pakistan for love, that too by shutting down trade, then it will have to develop the industry at the basic level necessary. Swadeshi has to be emphasized.
Reading and its Techniques
There are four skills usually used to master a language. Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. A good reader becomes good listeners, speakers and writers. Nonetheless, the fact remains that no one skill learned alone, mostly the combination of all skills. Reading is preferred for Pleasure, examination, general information, specific knowledge, problem-solving, draw logic etc.
Types of Reading
1. Scanning
2. Skimming
3. Intensive Reading
4. Extensive Reading
Above are the four types of readings. Usually, we call them as reading techniques.
In the age of internet and information overload what to read and what not to read is extremely crucial. Reading techniques help in dealing with such a situation.
Detail Explanation of types of reading
Scanning
Scanning is reading with a specific purpose in mind for specific information. When one reads an entire text/ document quickly while looking for specific information, it is known as scanning.
For examples:- Going through an entire newspaper and looking for specific news like try to get specific information about Delhi University admission, on Election- Poll etc.
Skimming
Skimming is speed reading for an overview of general information. Going through an entire newspaper quickly through the headlines is an example of skimming. Going through Data- table quickly to elicit to an overall idea of the topic on which data is presented is an example of skimming techniques of reading. Do not expect or deep comprehension of the written text after skimming. Reading only the headings of the chapter is skimming.
“A.K Pugh in his book “Silent Reading – An Introduction to its Study and Teaching suggested that since scanning is a less complex style of reading it can be introduced first. Skimming requires fluency and more practice required, it should be introduced later.”
Intensive Reading
It is a specific written piece for a specific purpose. It is going into minutest details of a particular word/phrase/line/paragraph.
For example:-
“The woods are lovely dark & deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep”
Refer: “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by “Robert Frost”
To answer a question like,’ what is the meaning of ‘woods’ in the poem, one will adopt intensive reading techniques. This Skill is very crucial for language learners, as they pick up vocabulary focus on structure& syntax while following these techniques.
Scrivener in his book ‘Learning Teaching’ Published in 1994, described that the readers carefully and closely read a short text to gain as an understanding of as much as detail as possible.
Extensive Reading
It is a kind of general reading for general information. Generally, this technique is used for pleasure reading, like reading a novel for pleasures.
For Example:- If one is asked to read to a chapter before discussing it in class, one goes for extensive reading to get the general idea of the piece. While reading unseen passage, both extensive & intensive both is required. For dealing with specific questions intensive reading is required, but for initial reading is for the general idea of the passage.
Skimming and Scanning Together
- Both are referred to as types of reading & other times as skills.
- By practising skimming & scanning, the individual learns to read and select specific information without focusing on information that is not important or meaning.
- Skimming involves a thorough overview of a text and implies limited activity, only retrieving information relevant to a purpose.
Intensive and Extensive Reading Together
- It is common for both approaches to reading to be used in the same class. For example, where extensive reading is encouraged, the teacher may have the student read together or learn a specific skill such as writing an outline.
- In the class where intensive reading is mostly used, the student may be asked to read texts of their choosing to report back on, in either an oral or written format.
- In both approaches, it is not the nature of the skills that are of most interest but rather, results.
Merchant of Venice – a tragedy or a comedy
One of the Shakespeare’s most powerful, strange, uncomfortable plays. A play about a piece of paper with a promise, a dangerous promise, and yet its a comedy. Sometimes showcasing the relation between Jews and Christians, sometimes, comedy and tragedy, and sometimes between those who are at center and the margins. Yet, it is a play that engages with toxic materials, with the major themes of self interest, the divine quality of mercy, hatred as a cyclical phenomenon.
Though, the play begins with a comic, but not entirely lighthearted way with a group of friends – male friends. But as the play proceeds, through act two, the story turns to unfold, and it is out of the history of hatred and suspicion that the play withstands in a new way. And turns into a tragic event. In act three is a famous moment, where the speech of Shylock (one of the tragic figures of the play) is a declaration of shared humanity. This speech makes the extremely strong claim of the opposite, that we share the same being. But it is also worth remembering that the speech ends with a declaration of determination to revenge.
This is a play that says if you treat me this way, I will want to get my revenge. And I have learned that also from you, because when you are treated badly you want revenge.
This play stages rage on the part of the persecuted minority. The determination on the part of Shylock to kill his enemy.
Going all the way through the act four, we,as an audience, experience that it might turn out to be one of the tragic plays, as is clear from the trial scene, ending up with Antonio’s death. But, lastly ends up with a happily -ever- after mood. In act five, everyone marrying their loved ones, changing of lives.

Genre –
There are two ways that people tend to think about comedy, a more romantic idea and a more satiric idea. And the romance is what throws the emphasis on the reconciliation.
When the play begins, fulfilling the audience’s expectations of what a comedy might look like, we have young men bantering with each other, teasing Antonio about the fact that he is sad. We also have the introduction of marriage plot, we learn that Bassanio wants to woo Portia. Also, Portia wants to find an acceptable husband. The play also goes towards a romantic play, a myths, fairy tales, romance stories that audiences might be familiar with, like involving the casket test. Audience might have reacted with some surprise when we hear this tragic news that Antonio has defaulted, that his life is in danger.
Thus, this is a play that leaves the audiences awestruck with its continuously changing moods, starting rightly from a comic pace, to going through some tragic moments, and finally ending up with a rom-com arena. Which is why most of the playwrights often misconceptualise it and try to mould it in a way which suits their audiences the most.
