WEEPING WINDOW

The hum of the radio

a far distant cry

the sorrowful weeping

from the broken window

Puzzling, why would the cherry skies

the golden riverbed

the symphony of the saxophone

could bring such misery

to those mysterious cries

The radio now broken

the distant cry now a cacophony

the voice, breaking

now of deep resentment, of anguish unheard

my footsteps echo

I sense hasty retreat

of those rhythmic feet

a haunting stillness fills the air

of dreary lanes and dusty highways

I find myself drawn for those

pain filled whimpers

the radio now lined with dust

the skies grey

the unwelcomed bombings instills terror

the ghastly dead bodies that lay

amidst the horror , I hear the scream

a scream for freedom, of anguish,of lost loved ones and terror

Beneath the window

eyes lined with fear

lips parched with suppression

cheeks glistening of fresh tears

my feet finds strength

I dash downstairs, my hijab snags

amid the charred glass

my pistol in hand

snatching those blood covered hands

we flinch when anything snaps

now undaunted by his reassuring glance

we flee, driven out of our own homeland

the terror spreads, bombings like a murderous plague

till our feet burns, under the scorching sand

our blood covers every wall of our land

I imagine the dust lined radio

my memory still fresh of the weeping window

ANOUSHKA MUKHERJI

In a war ravaged country, where once you could hear the noisy chatter of the radio and see the beautiful golden lit sky, now only the dark grey clouds and crumbled pathways welcome you. Amidst all this chaos, we see two innocent souls fighting to survive. The poet senses a wailing noise coming from somewhere nearby and goes to inspect it during which she comes across a small boy weeping. His rhythmic sobs seems sorrowful and he looks terrified. This gives the poet the strength to run away with the boy with a pistol in her hand, from that place. In the aftermath of this destruction we come to understand that the poet has fled her homeland along with the small boy and is now reminiscing about the whole experience. The war has torn the country apart and there is nothing but broken pieces of land scattered here and there. From ‘our blood covers every wall of our land’ we understand that the poet is talking about the death of her countrymen. Those who fought bravely against the invaders and lost their lives for their homeland. This is a very grim scenario created by the poem which shows the harsh realities of what is going on in the world. When two countries are at war, the casualties  are not only physical but emotional too. People who have managed to escape have to live lifelong with the trauma of the past and some even develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This poem is a depiction of how war affects young children and how they have to cope with being separated from their country. It is a very implicit depiction of the war turned country of Israel.

UNDER THE CHERRY BLOSSOM

Gentle breeze brush the blush tint of petals away from my face

Whilst I peeped from behind to find warm brown eyes greeting me

that eternal lingering fuzzy feeling lasts when you shyly look away

I prettied myself, neck adorned with lace

As I flicked through that worn out diary, out of curiosity

Your loving glance, a sigh escapes me

Tenderly, I reached out only to catch falling cherry blossoms

First springs of the month, the sky doused in love splashed with hued pink

The cackle of geese, the babble of relentless joy once hushed come the sedentary winters

Now in full bloom like the cherry blossoms in their own merry and gay has said to intertwine lover’s fate

Blessed be they who catch the first spring petals believing with their heart’s content

The sun dips low the artist changes palette

Wondering how lonesome  the night would feel  when all in deep slumber

As I take my time to proceed I make no haste

I flick open the cap and pour my soju as I disguise my distaste of the stinging taste

It douses a fire I convince myself as my Id overpowers my ego

Night after night the streetlamp flickers but I always seem to search for those bright eyes

In the dead of the night what madness one must wonder but I am relentless

The hush of the trees and the whispering breeze gives me company

As the night starts to get chilly I wrap my comforter tightly

Hurrying home, wistfully thinking if only I could cajole you into accompanying me

Wrapped in my arms caressing you tenderly, drifting to sleep  the lullaby of sweet melody

Amidst the chaotic mornings, your hungry eyes still find mine ever awaiting eagerly

Day after day my clouded thoughts jumbled with the yearning for you fuels my growing impatience

My perseverance grows thin as I flip through my worn out diary

Under the cherry blossom tree

I cannot reach out, nor touch thee

Not until I could take you home, your beseeching eyes call to me

One melancholic morning you come bounding on all four

I stroke you lovingly digging my fingers in your soft coat as I smell deeply your puppy scent

It fills my nose as I shower you with kisses and bounce you happily

Taking one last look at the cherry blossoms we sway lightly and tread softly

Back home.

ANOUSHKA MUKHERJI

The poem wishes to express the heartfelt bonding between a woman and a dog who have just met. Coincidentally both of them are suffering from bouts of loneliness and thus keep each other company thereby developing a beautiful relationship. This poem conveys how human interactions are not always necessary for curing loneliness through companionship. The woman at first doubts and hesitates if she will be able to take proper responsibility for the dog and delays making a decision. Nevertheless, we see her bravely forgoing all her unnecessary dilemmas and finally taking the dog back home with her.

EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE

Emotional resilience refers to one’s ability to adapt to stressful situations or crisis, it is intrinsic motivation, an inner force by which we can hold ourselves through all the downsides of life. Emotional resilience is not about winning the battle, it is the strength to power through the storm and keep the sail steady. Studies have shown that stressed people experience a flood of powerful negative emotions which may include anger, anxiety, and depression. Some people remain trapped in these negative emotions long after the stressful events that have caused them has passed. Emotionally resilient people, on the other hand, are quickly able to bounce back to their normal emotional state. We have experienced the 26/11 attacks, the Gujarat Riots, the 1999 Super Cyclone, and many other such calamities, people who could cope with these and get their life back on track have the mental strength or emotional resilience to survive in drastic circumstances. Today the world is going through an enormous change, the pandemic is multiplying at an immeasurable rate, there is unrest between the United States and Iraq and between China and India, here resilience means that people are aware of these changes, accept them without bemoaning and adjust to these challenges. Emotionally resilient people are strong enough to bounce back to their daily life and start functioning normally. People who live in flood-prone areas or where earthquakes occur frequently have that strength to quickly adapt to the situation when they are faced with challenges. It is because they have already faced the situation and are ready to overcome the destructive forces of nature a second time. Similarly, people serving in the military have encountered violence and they are trained in such a way that it wouldn’t affect their daily life. Emotional Resilience has three building blocks – these are the pillars on which we can build resilience or work on improving it. Also referred to as the three dimensions of emotional resilience, the three elements include:

https://www.gracepointwellness.org/298-emotional-resilience/article/5780-how-resilience-works

What is Emotional Resilience and How to Build It? (+Training Exercises)

  • The Physical Elements

Involving physical strength, energy, good health, and vitality.

  • The Mental or Psychological Elements

Including aspects like adjustability, attention and focus, self-esteemself-confidence, emotional awareness and regulation, self-expression, thinking, and reasoning abilities.

  • The Social Elements

Including interpersonal relationships (work, partner, kids, parents, friends, community, etc), group conformity, likeability, communication, and co-operation.

The attitudes that make up emotional resilience are powerful because they enable people who subscribe to them to cope with great efficiency and effectiveness. It is not true that only emotionally resilient people can know the tricks and play of how to cope with difficult situations, it is just that they know how to apply them well to those situations.

Resilient people believe that they have the potential for control over their lives; they believe that they can influence their situation. Non-resilient people tend not to share this belief, and consequently, their stress-coping efforts don’t fair as well. People don’t work at coping when they don’t believe that coping can help.

One of the major causes of the piling up of human emotions is stress. While some form of stress is needed to motivate a person to go about his daily life, some forms of stress are harmful to the body and cause a body were and tear. This is what emotionally resilient people deal with. They apply stress buster techniques in their daily life and go on about it.

ANALYSING MILLS UTILITARIANISM

DEVOTION SEES NO RELIGION

“Ahe Nila saila Prabala Mata barana mo Arata Nalini banaku Kala dalana Ahe Nila saila”. Nestled on the eastern coast of India neighboring West Bengal lies Odisha the home to Sri Lord Jagannath. Notable for being one of the Char Dham or four abodes, the grandiose Jagannath temple of Puri for ages has heard the devotional songs sung by many great poets and priests. Drawn by the alluring aura of the Great Lord saints like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and poets like Salabega have also been mesmerized by it. Just like the sweetness of Kanika bhog which is offered to the lord as Mahaprasad, there is an immense sweetness in this story of love and devotion of Salabega. Salabega was the son of the Mughal subedar, Lalbeg, and a young Hindu Brahmin widow who was a devotee of Lord Jagannath, who lived in the first half of the 17th century. As soon as he was sufficiently old, SalaBega took up fighting in his father’s campaigns. It so happened that, in the war where Lalbeg died, SalaBega got badly injured and was battling for life. His mother prayed to her beloved Lord Jagannath for her dear son’s life and her prayers were answered. SalaBega was cured miraculously. His mother told him then that Lord Jagannath was an incarnation of Vishnu, the creator of the universe. This incident made SalaBega convinced about the healing essence of the Lord, thus he ended up becoming Lord Jagannath’s devotee. Feeling greatly indebted to Lord Jagannath, he went to Puri to see Lord Jagannath. However, due to the custom of not allowing non-Hindus to enter the temple, the priests didn’t allow SalaBega to enter the temple. SalaBega didn’t fight or opposed them. He waited for the annual Chariot festival, the Rath Yatra where Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are brought out onto the Bada Danda and travel to the Shri Gundicha Temple, to their maternal aunt’s temple, in huge chariots allowing the public to have darsana. They stay there for nine days and travel back to the Shree Mandira. So every year he kept a watch for the chariot, he built a small hut on that road which is the Mazar now. During the rest of the year, he kept visiting religious places. On a particular year, he got delayed in coming back to his hut from Vrindavana, as on the way he suddenly fell ill. Feeling helpless and realizing that he would not reach Puri in time to see the Ratha yatra festival, he offered prayers to Lord Jagannath pleading him to wait until he arrived at the Rath Yatra. An anxious SalaBega cried out to Lord Jagannath and had a dream in which the Lord promised him that He would wait for him. So when the Nandighosha or the chariot of Lord Jagannath reached near the hut of SalaBega, it refused to move even an inch. People tried to pull it hard but nothing happened. They even got elephants to push the Nandighosha but SalaBega’s utter devotion to the Lord kept the Chariot glued to that exact spot for seven days. By then, the King of Puri and all priests were worried. The head priest got a dream telling him not to worry as the Lord was waiting for his favorite kid. So for 7 days, all rituals of Lord Jagannath, all pujas were done on the Chariot itself. SalaBega came at last. This time, nobody stopped him from going closer to the Lord. He went and had his darshan, and worshipped the Lords. Now it is ritualistic for the Lord’s chariot to stop near his Samadhi every year during Rath Yatra. The Lord’s benevolence is not restricted to just one religion, he sees everyone as his children.
Recently before the commencement of the rath yatra this year, the Supreme court of India passed an order canceling the Rath Yatra citing the growing concern of the pandemic as the reason for which 21 persons moved the court seeking recall of its order staying the historic Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra. Among them was Aftab Hossan, a 19-year-old Muslim student from Odisha’s Nayagarh district. Hossen has said his grandfather had constructed a Trinath (Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar) temple at Itamati in 1960. He said that he has also read several books on Lord Jagannath and developed devotion towards the ‘Lord of the Universe’. This instance shows that faith breaks all the boundaries created by religion uniting people. Continue reading “DEVOTION SEES NO RELIGION”

HUMANIZING VICTIMS OF SEX TRAFFICKING

Immanuel Kant’s Moral philosophy is credited for emphasizing the importance of human life and treating them as an end in themselves. In his doctrine, he specifically says quote-unquote ” It is not appropriate to use persons as though they were things purely at our disposal and without a will of their own”. While we ponder upon this and implement this in our daily life can the same be said about the victims of sex trafficking? Should they also be valued as having human worth? The sex trafficking racket is a discreet booming industry with a network ranging from your local neighborhood to the various cartels functioning over the world. These victims are not only assigned a value in terms of money but also seen as a commodity to be used at the abuser’s pleasure. Surveys conducted around the world show that the average age of trafficked victims to be between 18-34 with the predators targeting children at a mere age of 9-18. These helpless victims are lured with the promise of stable income, marriage, and emotionally manipulated into being dependent on their traffickers. With the onset of globalization, it was safe to assume that it would lead to the availability of goods world over but nobody could foresee that human beings could also be trafficked and sold like goods in the same manner. The critically acclaimed readers digest which is well known for its inspirational real-life stories reported one such incident in which a gutsy young woman helped rehabilitate the sex workers in her village area and gave them stable jobs. When interviewed about the motive behind her actions she said quote-unquote” They are not just girls. They are my daughters”.These women are treated as an outcast and shunned by society, the very same society in which they were born ultimately disowned them. These hard-hitting facts were revealed to the public sometime in 2008. She even has opened Astha Nivas, a children’s home to shelter the victims of sexual exploitation who are as young as three. This empowering real-life story is about none other than Sunitha Krishnan, a social activist, and Padma Shri awardee. BBC was accounted for interviewing the case of a young Indonesian woman Shandra Woworuntu who was caught in this sex trafficking industry after being deceived by her traffickers. She started an organization, Mentari, which helps survivors reintegrate into the community, and connects them to the job market. These victims go through severe trauma and some even keep on reliving their painful past day after day. “It’s hard to be accepted by the society” “We were treated as commodities before but now we are given even worse treatments” are some of the dilemmas these helpless victims have to face. It is because of some of these brave hearts like Sunitha Krishnan and Shandra Woworuntu that these young girls are given a second chance at life. The present situation is far grimmer. Because of the rising pandemic, these victims of sex trafficking have it worse. With no means to get a job nor have access to necessities, some of them revert to the sex industry to make ends meet. Their only source of help now remains with the NGOs which strive to help get them out of the murky waters.

JOURNALISM

Journalism has metamorphosed into a brand new era of technological development making online news available globally and continuously. it’s with irrefutable proof that research has shown that online journalism not only provides us with 24/7 coverage but it’s also less time consuming compared to other kinds of media. While regarding this statement one may voice two opinions: whether it’s as reliable as reading the newspaper, as online media is additionally crammed with lots of false information, so is it easy to curb the flow of such news and target relevant information? Although there has been an overflow of false information online, it’s been unanimously accepted that concerning genuine or authentic news website may reduce your chance of getting misinformed. The second opinion which one might imagine: how is that online journalism any better than reading the newspaper or opening a news channel on television? In our busy work schedule, not many people can afford to attend for the daily paper to arrive nor have the luxurious of your time to open a news channel, keeping this in mind online fourth estate is a smaller amount time consuming because it is simply with the touch of our fingertips that we’ve got access to a spread of reports. We even have to require into consideration the mobility of reports as working folks that are always on the move need something to stay pace with. Carrying a newspaper could appear a hassle when contrasted with carrying a transportable and getting regular news updates. Not only are we keeping pace with 24/7 coverage but it’s also less time consuming and less space-consuming. within the current global scenario, one might need to also take into consideration the growing pandemic which has made us all petrified of the spread of the virus. This puts using newspapers out of the question and involves contactless accessibility to information. For this our technological devices get to use. If we are talking about the advantages of story outlets online we are obliged to say how we are presented with a large array of reports online. We get to create our choice here. Unlike reading the newspaper or watching the news on television, we get to decide on what we wish to read here. Thus this permits for personalization of the news portal. Online journalism is additionally advantageous for one more very unique reason. Suppose somebody who is learning a global language says Spanish wants to follow up with the Spanish news thoroughly. How may he/she do so? because it isn’t available locally, one may talk over with the web news portal. With globalization making strides during this 21st century, news channel like Al Jazeera and BBC World has given us access to news globally but there isn’t much choice when it involves picking a language of our choice. With a web media outlet, we will set a language of our choice and also access the region’s local news globally.  As no two journalism will offer an identical opinion on different topics, so we also are able to compare and contrast their opinions. Although we are also ready to do so if we are reading quite one newspaper daily, it’ll still be cumbersome to try to so. because of the growing environmental concerns and also the depletion of our forest covers, many environmentalists would agree that reading news online is arguably the simplest thanks to preventing the depletion of forest cover by saving trees. With more and more people choosing online news coverage some fourth estate outlets online have also made their website free which suggests accessibility thereto won’t cost you a dime. this can be also one in all the most important advantages of reading news online. We all face problems during an influence cut which implies no news coverage during power cuts. this example is often overcome by following up with the news portal online. With faster and safer data connections like 4G and 5G, it’s rather simple to attach with the news world online.

With this, we come to the present conclusion that print media online not only keeps us updated but also tends to be more people and environment centric. Keeping our interests insight, which we might all at now agree, the journalism online has achieved great success.

CHANGING GENDER NORMS

Our society has from the very beginning been governed by gender norms, assigning a place for each of the sexes and it was always expected for us to adhere to it . But in recent times with rising consciousness about the biased wall that separates the different sexes, society has strived to make the workspace more habitable so that there can be peaceful co-existence. History has led us to believe how that society which is deficient in practicing equality can be defunct and not let the country prosper as a whole. Naming a few revolutionary figures like Mary Kom, Kalpana Chawla, Vikram Seth, Gauri Sawant, Sanjeev Kapoor who should be lauded for breaking gender barriers and helping us become a progressive and prosperous society, have also contributed in breaking the various prejudices and stereotypes attached to categorizing work according to the sex. These virtuous legacy holders have not only left a visionary impact on the young minds but also have helped a few of them to achieve their dream. In the 21st century with the oncoming of many revolutionary changes, breaking gender barriers was a highly anticipated evolutionary change. We are still singing glory songs of the famed queen of Jhansi Rani Laxmibai in the post-colonial era who did not submit to British authority and fought to save her kingdom. She was one of the few brave hearts who could not be subjugated by male dominance. It was uncustomary during those times for a woman to rule a kingdom. When talking of female rulers during the colonial times, one cannot miss mentioning Razia Sultana the valorous Queen of Delhi sultanate and who is notable for being the first female Muslim ruler of the Indian subcontinent. The UN also has incorporated this changing scenario in its selection for possible women candidates for the post of general secretary a post traditionally held by men. In this way, the UN which is very active and vocal in its agenda for abolishing the gender disparity has successfully helped pinpoint the existing problems in the society. The Air Force has taken a major stride towards achieving gender parity by allowing women in combat roles. “Indian Air force (IAF) ensures equal opportunities are given to all men and women” (as published by Hindustan Times). Even in the medical field where a registered nurse was seen as an occupation solely for women to pursue, it is now becoming a common trend for even men to work as registered nurses. Women in the past, who were forced to confine themselves in the house and take care of the children have turned the tables so drastically that now women functioning in the economy have become a crucial part in managing the market economy. Similarly bonding with the baby, engaging with one’s child has also improved the father-child relationships over the world. This has proven effective in may manners and now even men are engaging in babysitting duties. World-renowned chefs like Gordan Ramsey, Sanjeev Kapoor make us realize that men actually possess culinary skills and can work just fine without burning the house down. These success stories help us realize however small our dreams may be, they still are worth achieving.

FEMINISM

Contrary to popular aggressive fronts of Feminism, I might wish to start on a really passive note. it is very likely that several a time we mistake feminism for being very hostile towards men, some even naming this the ‘anti-men’ movement. Well to interrupt this delusional concept of these few, we might should first address the essential general idea behind feminism. Feminism incorporates the concept of equality between sexes in terms of political equality, social equality, etc. The feminist moment was a awfully radical movement that gained momentum mainly within the west (as the texts might want you to believe) but contrary to popular belief, every a part of the planet was fighting a battle of its own concerning gender equality. Here it’s inevitable to denote what many such arguments have stated if feminism does indeed incorporate the concept of equality between sexes why does it still give more weightage to the upliftment of ladies and not men and girls equally. If we flip through the pages of history we’d find that the plight of ladies was such they were only seen as a childbearing commodity. during this sense, they didn’t have any social standing. to own your own opinion, a distinct state of mind than those of the bulk of men was seen as blasphemous, it absolutely was against god’s wish to administer women an inquisitive mind and a voice. Till this date these instances are inescapable. While being attentive to a particular ted discuss feminism, the speaker didn’t fail to say that what irks us the foremost is that the 19th-century thinking of some opinionated people. Using their critical thinking for the more severe these few people associate the term with the shortcoming to seek out a decent husband. Here the medieval century thinking comes into play where women are tied right down to being managed by men all their life. While many might think that feminism paints a really beautiful picture, but we could only attribute this to the pioneers who went through the gruesome battles, fighting for the rights of ladies and coming this far. The history of India especially had a really dark past. India may be a culturally diverse country that had many such infamous traditions that even the Britishers thought were worth interfering with. The custom of Sati which involved self-immolation of the widow on the pyre of her husband was one such inhuman practice. Sati wasn’t practiced to send the husband and wife into heaven, but because widows, entitled to a number of the family property after their husband’s death (through the Dayabhaga Law in Bengal), became a liability because of the fear that they may claim it. Thus, coercing them into the mound was a secure bet. So it had been one in all the landmark moments in history when an analogous case happened with a young boy who had to witness his sister in law being forced to partake during this practice. This gallant young boy who we all remember as Raja Rammohan Roy then grew up to become one in all the best polygot scholars of Bengal and helped abolish this barbaric practice. Another such stalwart leader of the 19th century was Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, who was a prominent figure in advocating widow remarriage, helped accelerate this movement. However, we must always not be oblivious of the accomplishments of some of the lesser-known figures like Fatima Sheikh who is considered the primary Muslim woman teacher in India, Tarabai Shinde who defied the present patriarchy through her works in ‘Stri Purush Tulana’ in Marathi which translates to the comparison of ladies and men, etc. If this ongoing scenario will be described accurately, it’d not be wrong to mention that these great leaders have passed down the baton to us to hold on with the legacy in what looks as if an endless marathon. If we were to carefully assess the hindrances this movement faced, it’s hard to miss that beginning with misogyny, moving on with anti-feminist or misanthropic speeches, and so carrying on with the pseudo feminism, this vicious never-ending cycle has done but little to prevent its progression. Lastly, i’d put this time across that girls are subjugated, maligned, and mistreated throughout the ages but that failed to stop us from fighting for our rights. A bleak and unsure future didn’t deter us from our path.

MENTAL HEALTH

When we state our priorities, we assign a very important place for our health. But then why do we forget that, as far as our health is concerned mental wellness is also an important criterion for our well being. We fail to address the issues concerning the mental well being of a person. When we talk of mental disorders, it is people’s prejudice against such existing illnesses that make us feel ashamed to voice our concerns and thus aggravates our situation. Why is a mental illness in the 21st century still treated as a social stigma? This stigmatization has not only led to a few disastrous cases but also the downfall of many a great leader. The inability to extend help during these grave times is what deteriorates one’s wellness. Its high time that we break the existing stereotypes attached to mental illness and take adequate measures to help someone in need. Changing times calls for drastic measures to improve the current scenario. But changing times has also made people more aware of what is happening around them. We celebrate World Mental Health Day because people have gained consciousness and have become aware of the present situation. We are raising our voices and extending our hands to those who are in immediate need of help. The current global situation with the growing pandemic is alarming because it not only puts our health in danger but it also harbors negative thoughts, fear, and disbelief of the current global crisis. Reports are flooding in about the many cases of suicides that have taken place. This is becoming a global concern and people are becoming fearful of what might happen next. In these times we are asked to stay strong and stay healthy. A part of this wellness would be derived from mental strength and the capacity to adapt to the situation. But not all of us can do so because we don’t have equal resources to help us out. What may one you might ask do so then? I would suggest that we should try to stay connected to our loved ones, seek help when we are facing problems and engage in activities that might cheer us up. Doing this will not only enhance our potential of having a healthy mind but also might dispel the negative thoughts from our minds. Some may strategize some other incentives to overcome facing such a situation. Our techniques may be different but we all are aiming at preserving our healthy minds and preventing ourselves from getting depressed. The concept of Monday blues has taken a turn for the worse. Now every day feels like a Monday because we are either sitting idle with nothing to do or we are unemployed due to the cash crunch in the economy. In these times it takes a lot to stay motivated and cheered up. It is like a testing time for us. This pandemic is testing our perseverance and we should all excel in achieving success. This means that we should all hold on until this crisis ends.
