The book “Creation and Evaluation” is written and compiled by Dr. Vijay Vishal. It’s published by Popular Book Depot, Jaipur in 2014 with ISBN: 978-81-86098-13-4.

This book celebrates Dr. Vijay Vishal’s creativity and objectivity. The book has two parts and 4 sections: Each part has two sections. Part one is collection of Poems whereas part two is reviews and published research articles on poet’s collection.

I came across this book “creation and Evaluation” during one of my academic pursuits and get very attracted by its contents and presentation. The poet Dr. Vijay Vishal is really a man of letters who has dedicated his life in reading, writing and creativity. His best thing is that he not only creates but presents his own poetry’s critical analysis with same spontaneity. “Poetry is the spontaneous over flow of powerful feelings”,  I think this live is the base of every literature lover. We all love and praise poetry since time immortal. So, this book naturally draws my attention, when I came across it. The book has two parts, each part is divided in two sections Part I, section I is collection of 46 poems composed by Dr. Vishal, titled “Speechless Messenger”. All the poems have different title, some of them are about the beauty of Nature, birds and some are about realities of life and contemporary issues. Some poems express platonic love of the lovers. The poems are of rich quality written in an ornate style. He conveyed his feelings on different aspects of life. He writes in direct and clear notion, mysticism is totally absent. In Part I section II we have collection of 37 poems under the title “Parting Wish”. These poems are about the change in life, from Ancient to Modern times, from Girl to married women, and other changes that occur in life of a human being. It can be a male or a female. Dr. Vishal is a poet of keeping past traditions alive. He has kept art of English Romanticism alive in his poetry. He expresses human feelings, sufferings, problems and changes in his poetry. To him, life is not a free flow of water but it has hurdles which we have to pass. This is what his poetry gives us in the form of message.

Second part entitled ‘Evaluation’ has 3 sections. Section I has published reviews of Speechless Messages, Section II has reviews of Parting Wish and section three has published research articles based on both poetic collection. This part containing 3 sections has made the book somewhat different par excellence as it give us criticism of poetic collection too.

Poetry is a natural overflow of feelings which is loved and liked by all. Dr. Vijay Vishal is this collection of poems has shown his best to attract his reader. His both collection of poems deal with a variety of topics and cover wide range of feelings, emotions and realities of life. In Part I section I “Speechless Messages” the poet, Dr. Vishal has given space to feelings and emotions related to Nature. Role of nature in context to human life has been beautifully presented in the form of poetry. His name as a poet is known to us, but this collection is his debut collection. By this bundle of poems, he want to convey a message of hope, aspiration and optimism as he sees expectations in the objects of Nature. His belief in the social norms and family are also positive if we analyse his poetry. The unborn foetus also shows rays of hope. The collection has 46 poems and the wide variety of subjects shows poets command over feelings, thought and Goddess Muse seems to be giving him divine blessings.

Part I Section II parting wish contains 37 poems which were actually written to keep poet Dr. Vijay Vishal’s bereaved wife’s soul and memory alive forever. She left poet alone in a very young age which perturbed him very much. The poet has mentioned reality and facts of life in the poems of this collection. The book shows reflection of Swimsburne in all the poems. The poems are really good and suggestive in readings. They can be categorised as autobiographical poems as they are the outburst of his own loss at a very age of life. Due to that he has lost interest in world and life. He wished to God to grant him courage to bear all this. The deep sorrow, suffering and pain which he expressed seem to be really pathetic. He is so original and his use of language is so commendable that we feel like as reading them again and again.

Part II has three sections which really have par excellence book reviews and research papers. The poet is lucky enough that nearly all stalwarts of contemporary era have given reviews on his books. They are really a gem of collection. The reviews again show that Dr. Vishal has really worked hard, original and poured feeling of his heart through pen. The area of subject he covered is wide in ‘Speechless Messanger’ but the collective give an optimistic note. In second collection ‘Parting wish’ the poet is Superb, original and an ardent lover who lost his beloved untimely, unrealistically. He is preparing himself mentally to bear the loss and to continue life even without her, keeping her alive forever in his memories. One aspect of his poetry which is left untouched was covered in the Part II, section three, where we have a published research paper titled “Anguish in the poems of Dr. Vishal.” The paper shows that Dr. Vishal  saw poetry as a notion to unleash social outrage. To him, it can awaken the dormant psyche of all people. He wants to uplift Indian tradition of poetry writing to a far end. All the critics who wrote on Dr. Vishal’s poetry, have one same opinion that he is a budding promising poet. who carved an eminent position in present day Indian English poetry. His poetry is a search of best verses of the present times and we can hope high with him and his pen. We can really hope that his bouquet of poems will enliven Indian English poetry.

TILTING TOWARDS THE PAST: THE DILEMMA OF SINDI OBEROI IN ARUN JOSHI’S ‘THE FOREIGNER’

Dr.Madhu Jindal

Associate Professor

ept. of English, M.P. College for Women, Mandi Dabwali-151001, Haryana, India.

Abstract

This study intends to focus on  the tilting of Arun Joshi’s protagonists towards the past and his trying to explain the existential problems in the context of the Indian tradition of detachment and Karamyoga. Sindi Oberoi in The Foreigner, Billy Biswas in The Strange Case of Billy Biswas or Som Bhaskar in The Last Labyrinth, face an existentialist dilemma. According to R. S. Pathak, “Joshi’s novels read like the spiritual odyssey of the twentieth century man who has lost his spiritual moorings” (109). His fiction reinforces an increasing awareness of man’s rootlessness and the consequent feelings of anxiety and alienation that afflict him. A close look at his fiction, however, brings multidimensional perspectives of his characters who, on the surface level, remain entangled in the cobweb of being and meaning of life but seek in India’s Hindu past and sensibility answers to these afflicting questions. In addition, they find answers to their unflinching queries in  the teachings of Buddha that have been an integral part of Indian ethos. While going back to Indian culture, his characters become aware of their historical past and its advantages and find peace and meaning only after embracing it. This study aims at identifying the inner sources of Sindi’s life which sustain him in his worst crises and how he leans against his past, the sensibility of being an Indian which delivers him from the curses of modern living.

How Anger Manifest in Contemporary Indian English Poetry

Dr. Reena Mittal

This is a book review of the book titled ‘Anger in Contemporary Indian English Poetry’

Author: Dr. Vijay Vishal

Publisher: Vivek Publishing House, Jaipur, India.

Year: 2014.

ISBN: 978-93-83127-04-7.

The book is a critical study of three noted, promising and living poets of Post Emergency Era. This book will show a new direction to the scholars as it gives a description of History combined with poetry.

The tradition of Indian English poetry is more than 150 years and we have more than thousand collections of poems and lots of writers. ‘Anger’ is a dominant feeling prevalent in the poems of Indian English. Even if we turn the pages of History, we will find a long list of poets and scholars with dominant feeling of Anger. This feeling is not there for any destructive purpose but to make corrections in situations, customs, rituals, politics and professional life. The book by Dr. Vijay Vishal is the outcome of contemporary poets and the underlying purpose of the book is to tell and sermonise the society. The book is divided in 6 chapters overall. The first chapter is Introduction, and second chapter is the most interesting in which the writer introduced the crux of his research. This chapter deals with contemporary postmodern poets from Indian English Era and discussed Nissim Ezekiel, A.K. Ramanujam and Jayanta Mahapatra. They three are really outstanding, innovative and individualistic. They have been widely read, discussed and praised. Other than these three Dr. Vishal has introduced a long list of contemporary rising poets who have a rage, spark and feeling of Anger in their poetry. The Anger in them is not actually negative feeling but it is prevalent for the sake of amendments in the society. He gives space to Keki N. Daruvalla too who is a major contemporary voice. In this chapter he gave a regular space to many who are not popular nationally but regionally. Third chapter is dedicated to Dr. R.K. Singh, one of three main poets whom the book is actually dedicated. He is a well-known IEP, critic and has a long list of publications to his credit. He is known for giving special effects to his language and articulates his experience is a novel way. He wrote with International sensibility with ‘Bahai’ mind-set because to him poetry is Humanity to him poetry is a means of inner-liberation. He longs for love and affection in the midst of gloom and despair. Fourth chapter is about R.K. Singh who works for ESP and a poet of Indian English writing. His target students are from Science and technology. He has a long list of publication and his poetry is mainly derived from Indian political themes and social reality. His debut collection of poetry came into existence in Emergency time from 1975-77. His poetry has a spark and rage as he want to raise issues regarding upliftment of people and want them to come out of Jaws of so called Politicians. To him, satire and irony are connected but satire is more open and irony is delicate. He views about healthy state and despotic phase of Indian democracy were worth reading. His poetic genius is par excellence. He picks words, ideas and images and places them with varied experience. The rage, anger and spark continue in his poems because he was searching reforms to apply in society. The V chapter is about Dr. P. Raja who was literary award winning International poetry from Chennai. He is a multi-facet writer, translator, historian, essayist and what not. He works on deep insight of Indian trends, traditions and ethos. His poetry is redolent of Tamil culture and some words from Tamil are also borrowed. To him, a poet is like a mother, who keeps child in womb for a certain period before giving birth. Similarly, a poem is like a new born child to a poet. He writes poetry in satirical tone, multi-dimensional themes, and psychological problems. He penned on social manners, ritualism and idolatry in religion. His poems are fresh, simple and provide us a rewarding experience. His mastery over language and medium, use of imagery and symbolism and blending of thought and emotion make his poetry exquisite. The concluding chapter of the book is the outcome of the productivity of Dr. Vishal. This chapter discusses all three poets in the timeline of their work, creativity and technique. They three deal with a feeling of rage and upliftment of the common mass and society.  That a poet is like a prophet, who can give sermon to the society, is a belief. He can erase corruption in social, political and moral life. All the three poets are working for welfare of human beings. The feeling of ‘anger’ in their poetry can be visualised clearly.

The main purpose of writing the book and researching over the topic is not to tell about ‘Anger’ and to introduce so many writers. But a trend which came into existence after World wars, and spread all over the world is really beneficial to some extent, the critic want to tell this. The writer took three different poets for his reading and they three are writing on nearly same trend. Although they did not belong to same place, yet they hit the common topics in their poems. Dr. Vishal demonstrates various aspects of ‘Anger’ in this book with the help of these three poets. He wants to give a message that Rage and Anger not only give bad impact on the person they choose to show but when they come to the poems it give really concrete lessons. He culls out ‘Anger and its variables and tells its good and bad consequences.

At the outset I must admit that I am not an expert in the subject and poets discussed in the book. The book has 328 pages with 6 chapters and we have lots of References and a long Bibliography. Actually its research work of the Author whom he has developed in the shape of book. The topic is really catchy and draws every body’s attention. The poets discussed in the book are from Post Emergency era and have a spark and promise to amend the society. The word ‘Anger’ is used symbolically but it gives the effect of the power present in the poems of three poets. Prima Facia of the book gives us impression that this book is actually a thesis but no. It is a complete package to understand three living poets and their poetry. The main purpose of poetry is to spread the message of humanity, paternity and brotherhood. Poetry always serves the purpose of uplifting the shortcomings of society, changing their mind-set. The Author Dr. Vishal’s purpose for producing this book solved nearly as he produced the poets and their poetry in a naval way. I think it has given a new dimension to all the poets.

To sum up “Anger in Contemporary Indian English Poetry”, I can only say that it’s a complete study , if one want to know all about Post Emergency era of Indian English poetry. The book as well as its cover page is so impressive that we feel like going and reading it thoroughly. It gives us introductory Idea of some poets of Post Modern Indian English too. The language is simple to understand and ornate. The use of words makes it beautiful and substantial.
