An Empirical Study on Labour Out-Migration Its Determinants and Impacts over Agriculture: A Case of Mid-Hills of Western Development Region of Nepal

Anjan Adhikari & Virendra Singh

ABSTRACT

Migration is a glaring reality of today’s world. Further, globalization and integration of economies have added impetus to migration. In Nepalese economy the dwindling importance of the agricultural sector induces a sizeable labor migration in the quest of better livelihood especially in the hilly region in general, and in the Western Development Region, in particular. In view of this problem present study was attempted to study the determinants of migration and its impact over agriculture in Nepal. The study was based on information collected, from 40 migrant and 40 non-migrant families of two Village Development Committees (VDC) of Lamjung District in Mid-Hills of WDR, Nepal, using interview method. Logistic regression model was used to find out the determinants and linear regression model was applied to find out its impact. The variables number of male members in the family had positive impact on probability of migration other than this monthly family income, income from agriculture, and number of economically active members in the family and age of migrant exerted negative effect on probability of migration. In the same scenario the impact of labuor out migration over agriculture production was significantly negative.

Love as the element that transcends space and time in Interstellar

Dr Chung Chin-Yi

Research scholar,National University of Singapore

Abstract: It is thus essentially faith as a gift- a gift of love that drives Cooper to sacrifice himself by throwing himself into Gargantuan and thus reach the tesseract constructed by future humans who exist in five dimensions who will allow him to communicate across space and time to Murph who will eventually save humanity with the equation that will allow them to transport existing humanity across time and space with gravity to another habitable planet in the galaxy. For all its science thus Interstellar remains a story of love and sacrifice. What will eventually save humanity from itself is love.

‘To Avoid Looking a Fool’ or Repressed Ethnocentrism: A Postcolonial View of George Orwell’s shooting an Elephant

Suchismita Sarkar,

Assistant Professor, Dept. of English,  Dinabandhu Mahavidyalaya, Bongaon, North 24pgs.

Abstract

It is customary to consider George Orwell’s Shooting an Elephant the quintessence of imperialistic impression. More broadly , it demonstrates the adverse impact of  it on people  who unwittingly become a part of the entire system .In this  story the narrator unwillingly kills an elephant under compulsive and unavoidable circumstances and inadvertently emerges as and conforms to the figure of a Sahib who is assigned with the duty to lift up ‘the white man’s burden’. While performing such inhuman act, he defies his common sense, good judgement, instincts and emotions. But the crucial question still remains that whether he killed the creature only to save his honour, not to be tagged as a fool or his repressed ethnocentrism enkindled his desire to pose as a protector of the native people. This article is an attempt to  unravel the causes that worked behind his final decision to kill the elephant.
