Taylor’s Scientific Management

Taylor’s Historical Background

Scientific Management concept was developed by Fredrick Winslow Taylor. He was born in 1856. He was an American and began his career as a mechanist. He became popular through his theory of management and therefore also known as ‘Father of Scientific Management’.

While he was working in factories and mechanical shops he observed that owners and managers knew very little about what actually took place in the workshops. Taylor soon realized and believed that the system could be improved, and he looked around for an incentive. He settled on money. He believed a worker should get “a fair day’s pay for a fair days work” – no more, no less. If the person is unable to complete the target then he should not be paid. He also believed that both management and labour should cooperate and work together to achieve organisational goals. He was the first to suggest that primary functions of managers should be planning and training.

Taylor’s Scientific Management

Scientific Management means applying the scientific methods and tools to increase the output its quality and reduce costs and wastage. It is a systematic and thoughtful approach.

In words of Taylor, “Scientific Management means knowing exactly what you want from men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and the cheapest way”.

The concept of scientific management was given to improve the productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the organization through the application of the proposed scientific principles and techniques.

Principles of Scientific Management

The philosophy of scientific management is based upon the following principles.

1. Science, not Rule of Thumb –

According to Taylor, each job should be performed in an organisation as per the scientific approach as these were developed after proper analysis and research. It should not follow rule of thumb which was based on trial and error method and approaches were based on intuition which was not suitable for modern business. When science is applied instead of the rule of thumb, to any job, it standatdizes work and help workers get a specialised way of performing task by avoiding wastage of time, cost and other valuable resources.

2. Harmony, not Discord –

Taylor emphasised on maintaining harmony between the management and workers in the workplace. This will avoid conflict and will promote friendly relationship among them which can result in improvement and growth in productivity of both labour and managers. He also said that there should be a transformation in thinking of both parties, which implies that management should share the gains with workers and workers should work hard for the betterment of business.

3. Cooperation, not Individualism-

This principle is an extension of principle of harmony. Competition should be replaced by cooperation. Management and workers both should Realise that they need each other. For this, management should entertain the constructive suggestions of employees and at the same time, workers should also cooperate with management. According to Taylor, there must be an equal division of work and responsibility between workers and management.

4. Development of each and every person to his/her greatest efficiency –

As per this principle, Taylor had the view that due concern should be given to increase efficiency. It could be built right from process of employee selection. Each person should be scientifically selected and then assigned work as per their specialization. He believed that employees should be give proper training of the task they need to perform because no human being is perfect, and there is always a scope of improvement. Hence training and development improve competency, skills and learning of the workforce. It is beneficial for both the organisation and the workers.

Techniques of Scientific Management

Following techniques were deployed by FW Taylor for manufacturing and production units:

1. Functional Foremanship –

Taylor developed the technique of functional foremanship. Under this technique, planning and execution are separated from each other. According to Taylor, single worker or supervisor cannot be expected to be an expert in all aspects. Thus, he advocated the appointment of eight firemen, out of which four will be responsible for planning and the rest four will be concerned with the execution of work.

Let us see the hierarchy under the functional foremanship –

Factory Manager

A factory manager is a person who holds the highest managerial position in the unit and is responsible for the proper functioning of the organisation.

Planning Incharge-

A planning incharge is responsible for the formulation of policies, strategies and procedures of the operational activities. To simplify the work, following four clerks are appointed under the planning incharge.

a. Instruction Card Clerk:

The instruction card clerk will determine and direct how the work has to be performed.

b. Route Clerk:

A route clerk will decide what all is to be done and the steps which are to be taken to perform a particular task.

c. Time and Cost Clerk:

The person who determines the time limit in which the work is to be completed and the cost involved in carrying out each task is known as a time and cost clerk.

d. Disciplinarian :

A disciplinarian is a clerk who ensures discipline, follows rules and regulations and code of conduct in the organisation.

Production Incharge :

A production incharge needs to take care of all the operational and production activities. The four clerks assigned under a production incharge are as follows :

a. Speed Boss :

The speed boss is responsible for getting the work done on time.

b. Gang Boss :

The person w looks after the availability of all the equipment, tools and accessories is a gang boss.

c. Repair Boss :

The repairs boss has to take care of the repairs, maintenance and overhauling of the tools and machinery used for production.

d. Inspector :

The inspector is responsible for ensuring that all activities are being carried out in a planned manner. He/she also checks whether the quality of the products are as per standards or not.

Workman : He is a labour or worker at the operational level of the organisation who is responsible for actually performing the given task. Each worker is supervised and monitored by the eight different clerks, as mentioned above.

2. Standardisation and Simplification of Work :

Standardisation is the process of fixing well thought and tested norms with a view to maximize efficiency of work. Standardisation of product implies that the size, design, quality, shape etc of the product should meet the requirements and tastes of consumers.

Simplification means eliminating superfluous sizes, varieties and dimensions. It’s aim is to eliminate unnecessary diversity of products and thereby reduce costs. It will also help in achieving economy in the use of required machines and tools.

3. Work Study :

Taylor emphasised on examining and analyzing the working at the operational level of the organisation. It develops a systematic course of action and resolves the problems faced by labours and workers who are responsible for accomplishing the given task and duties.

Under this technique there are following four significant concerns of the organisation :

a. Method Study :

The managers come across numerous ways of performing a particular task or carrying out the production of goods or services. Out of all these possible methods, selection of the most appropriate way, which is cost effective and also increases the production is considered a method study.

b. Motion Study :

The motive behind conducting this study was to determine the movement of workers while performing a job. According to Taylor, it is necessary to analyze the movements of workers like how many times he lifts the objects, puts the objects because all these movements sometimes delay the work. Thus this study helps in knowing the productive and unproductive motions.

c. Time Study :

Analysing the time consumed for carrying out the given task in a specified manner is Taylor’s another scientific management technique which is called a time study. If an activity takes more time than the defined standard, it may lead to delay and decline in productivity. And if a task is accomplished much before the given time, it may lack efficiency.

d. Fatigue Study :

If an individual keeps on working without rest or pauses, it affects their health and efficiency. Therefore, fatigue study originated. This study seeks to find out the amount and frequency of rest intervals in completing a task. The objective of study is to find out how long a person can perform the standard task without any adverse effects on his health.

4. Differential Piece Wage System :

Taylor strong advocated piece wage system. He wanted to differentiate between efficient and inefficient workers. Under this system of wage payment, wages are paid on the basis of work done. According to him, higher rates were given to the workers who are producing standard products or more and lower rates were given to those who are producing less. Hence he talked about performance based remuneration and incentive based motivation.

5. Mental Revolution :

Taylor gave a powerful concept on changing the perception and attitude of both the employees and the management. They should both work together considering each other as family. There must be proper coordination and understanding among workers and the management in order to achieve organizational goals. Both of them must value efforts of each other and work together, creating a positive environment to achieve common organisational goals and objectives.

ADVERTISING

We daily come across hundreds of advertising messages on her phones, laptops, newspapers, television etc which tell us about various products such as toothpaste, soft drinks and services such as insurance policies, hotels, banking services etc.

So let us understand today what is advertising? What are it’s objectives and what are its benefits?

Advertising is the most commonly used tool of promotion. It is an interpersonal form of communication which is paid for by the marketers to promote goods and services. The most common forms of advertising are newspapers, magazines, television and radio.

Features of advertising –

  • Paid Form: Advertising is a paid form of communication where sponsor or marketer has to bear the cost of communicating with prospects.
  • Impersonality : Advertising is a one way communication. There is no direct face to face contact between prospect and the advertiser.
  • Identified Sponsor : Advertising is undertaken by some identified individual or company, who makes all the advertising efforts and bear cost of it.

Merits of Advertising

1. Mass Reach – Advertising is a medium through which we can reach large number of people over a vast geographical area. For example -Information about mobile launched in Delhi reaches to every village, city and other countries through advertising.

2. Enhances Customer Satisfaction and Confidence – When a product is advertised in newspapers or on television then it creates confidence among prospective buyers as they become assured abut product quality, brand etc and hence feel more satisfied.

3. Expressiveness – Even simply products looks more attractive due to advertising because of the graphics and designs used in it which easily attracts the customers.

4. Economy – Advertising is a very economical mode of communication. Because of its wide reach, the overall cost of advertising gets spread over numerous communication links established due to which per unit coat becomes low.

Limitations of Advertising –

1. Less Forceful – As it is an impersonal form of communication it is less effective as unlike personal selling it has no compulsion on the prospects to pay attention to the message.

2. Lack of Freedom – The evaluation of the effectiveness of advertising message is very difficult as there is no immediate and accurate feedback mechanism of message that is delivered.

3. Inflexibility – Advertising is less flexible as it is not tailor made to the requirements of different customers groups. It is usually standardised form catering to the needs of different people.

4. Low Effectiveness – As the volume of advertising is getting more expanded it is becoming difficult to make advertising messages heard by the target prospects. This is affecting its effectiveness.

Objections To Advertising –

Different people have different views on advertising. Some say it is a social waste as it adds to cost, multiplies the needs of people and undermines social values. Others argue that it is very necessary as I increases the reach, brings the pay unit cost of production down and adds to growth of economy. Let’s examine these arguments and see the extent to which they are true.

1. Adds to Cost- The opponents argue that advertising unnecessarily adds to the cost of product, which is ultimately passed on to buyers in form of high prices. The proponents say however it costs lot of money but it helps to increase demand for the product as large number of potential buyers comes to know about availability of product, it’s features etc. This increased demand will lead to higher production, which brings with it economies of scale.

2. Undermines Social Values – Some say advertising helps buyers by informing them about any new products while some say it undermines social values and promotes materialism. It breeds discontent among people as they come to know about new products and feel dissatisfied with their present state of affairs. Some advertisements even show new lifestyles which don’t find social approval.

3. Confuses the buyers – Now a days so many products are advertised making similar claims that buyers get confused as to which one is true and one can rely in it. The supporters of advertisiments argue that we are all rational human beings who make our decisions for purchase of products on factors such as price, size, style etc. Thus buyers can clear confusion by analysing the information provided on advertisements and other sources before taking decision to buy a product.

4. Encourages Sale of Inferior Products – Advertising does not distinguish between superior and inferior products and persuade people to even buy inferior products. Mainly it depends upon customers. If the product suits their requirements whether inferior or superior they will buy the product. However no advertisement should make false claim about the quality of product. If it makes false claims it can be prosecuted for the same.

5. Bad taste advertisements – Another criticism against advertising is that some are in bad taste showing things which is generally not approved. For example – Women running after a man because of a particular perfume. This is impractical and strange .While some advertisements distorts the relationship like employer employee and are quite offensive.

In the above article we have seen various views both of opponents and proponents of advertising. There may be chances that advertising as a tool is misused which can be properly safeguard by the law or by developing a code of conduct by the advertisers for their self regulation. However most of the criticism are not true. In this changed economic environment of globalisation advertising is considered as an important tool of marketing. It helps a firm to easily communicate with its target market thus increasing sales and reducing performance unit cost of production. It is not a social waste, rather it adds value to the social cause by giving a boost to production and generating employment.

” If you are trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language in which they think” – David Ogilvy

“We find that advertising works the way the grass grows. You can never see it, but every week you have to move the lawn” Andy Travis

Stop Finding Your Happiness IN People!

undefined

Don’t you remember those terrible days when you walked off sad empty sometimes due to other’s fault and sometimes due to your fault. If you have forgotten then it is sad on your part. Remember those betrayals, lies, manipulation and cheating you once suffered. How many times you were used and dumped. I think still you have not taken a lesson. You are still wandering around those selfish people your so called friends and lovers who left you when you badly needed them. Do you still can’t see that they don’t care about you. It is you only you who is expecting love and care from them. So stop now thinking about these selfish people. You were not sent on this planet to just love people either as a lover or as a friend. You have your own life and there has to be a bigger purpose in your life. That purpose was always their in your life but it was hidden in any corner behind your stupid emotional foolish feelings that you always had for people who always cheated you. You definitely knew what you wanted but you always allowed distraction to find you. Shit happens. Yes, it happens with you, with me and everyone else. But you can’t let your whole life become a shit. So wake up!

Stop finding your happiness in other people. For being truly happy you neither need other people nor materialistic things. Your true happiness is inside you only in your dreams and goals. I want you to be selfish now. Yes you heard it right selfish for your own growth and development. Enough of this melodrama crying and waiting for them. And enough of this always favoring other people. You are not only meant to be nice with others. Learn to say no, blunt no. Others need to realise your importance too. They have wasted your precious years by consuming all your love, support and care and these monsters left you when they were full and no more needed you in their life. So it’s time to stay away from every person who isn’t adding a value to your life.

I know I have talked so much about your pain and sufferings but have you changed yourself? If not then please change. Listen your inner voice. Noone matters litteraly noone matters. What matters is you, your inner peace, mental health, success and your happiness. For that you have to change. Please for your own sake change. Let people around you think whatever they want to. They don’t matter. They will leave you one day. But what will not leave is your family and your goals. That is enough for you. Don’t bring in distraction. Focus on your life and your dreams. You are not meant for these small things. You have to achieve something big. Today is not yours but tomorrow definitely future will be yours. So start working on your goals. One day you will definitely achieve a lot of success. That day everyone will be around you. Your all pain and sufferings will vanish and your life will be filled with happiness. Till then don’t tolerate bullshit . Don’t allow blood suckers enter your life. Don’t date snakes. To hell with these people. You have to think only about your life, your own happiness and success because it’s your life. Noone has the power to change your life only you can change . Think about it! That’s it for today!

Old And Alone!

undefined

It is high time now that we admit the issue of ‘Elder Abuse’ existing in our society. Every other day, we see news of parents being humiliated or mistreated by their children. Isn’t it a dark reality of our life’s. Inspite of the fact that like are parents one day we will also grow old still we continue to ill – treat them. We have become so insensitive that we have forgotten the reason why we are in this world? We have forgotten that we are alive because of them. They are the hands who made us walk in our life’s. Over the years they have made infinite sacrifices to give us good education and a good lifestyle. But what we are doing?? We are treating them as a burden of our life’s.

In various cases it is being found that parents are being intimidated or threatened.. They are even beaten up by their own so called children. Over the years the parents who fulfilled each and every need of their children now have to beg in front of their children to make their basic needs fulfilled. It’s such a shame that some even face sexual harassment.

According to 2014 estimates India has more than 100 million elderly people. (60 years and above). It has been found that more than 71% of senior citizens face harassment. Among them 10 million are forced to live out of their homes. It has been reported by many NGOs that 53.2% elderly abuse is due to property and inheritance disputes rest 35.7% is due to attitudinal and relationship issues. Children usually abuse their parents because they don’t want to spend an extra money on their chronic health issues, and other necessary needs. They have become so selfish that in order to save money they force their parents to do household work, take care of their children and expect them to just eat 2 time meal and sit all alone in any one corner of the house. They even have become greedy as they forcefully take over their property and hard earned savings and abandon them out of their houses. They throw their parents out of their own houses. Now the only safe place left with these elderly people is old age homes. It is found that an increasing number of elderly people are moving into old age homes in search of safety, independence and companionship.

Have you ever realised what are parents want? They only want to feel the love that they once shared with their children. They only want to relax and want their children to reciprocate their care. Every parent wants to see their child grow and be successful but no parent wants their child to treat them like an unnecessary load on their responsibilities. So this is the time to think and realize what we are doing because what we are doing today with them will happen to us tomorrow. So stop blaming or neglecting your parents. Start spending quality time with them. Listen to them and take care of them. This is the truth even when they are counting their last breath, they are still thinking about us. So don’t wait for their last breath. Express your love today before it becomes too late.

12 June – World Day Against Child Labour

Whenever we recall our childhood days then most of us remember those carefree and happy days of our life. We remember going to school, reading books, teacher’s surprise test, playing cricket with friends and a lot more activities that we miss dearly today. We were always fortunate because we were protected and our dreams were nurtured and cherished by our parents. But there are many children who are less fortunate. They work day and night in unfair circumstances for little or no money. In some extreme cases these children are even forced to work under threat of violence or death. These children mainly work to support their families who are usually trapped in vicious circle of poverty.

Child Labour – A Plague

Children are classified as child labourers when they are either too young to work, or are involved in hazardous activities that may compromise their physical, mental, social or educational development.

According to estimates by the International Labour Organization (2017) there are 152 million children aged between 5-17, subject to child labour. Among this 66 million are girls and 88 million are boys. Among this 72 million are engaged in dangerous work.

  • Almost 1 in 10 children between the age of 5 and 17 years old have to work.
  • About 4.3 million children aged below 18 years are in forced labour.
  • 70.9% engaged in agriculture.
  • 17.2% working in service sector.
  • 11.9% working in heavy industry.
  • Most child labour takes place in the informal sector.
  • Nearly 70% of children does unpaid work.

Africa alone is the home to 72 million child labourers, which is higher than any other continent. Asia and the Pacific rank second highest with 62 million child labourers in this region. Together they account for almost nine out of every 10 children in child labour worldwide. The remaining child labour population is divided among the Americans – 11 million, Europe and Central Asia – 6 million and the Arab States – 1 million.

About World Day Against Child Labour –

The International Labour Organization launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to raise awareness and prevent child labour. Each year on 12 June this day brings together government, employees, workers, organizations, civil societies and many people from around the world to highlight the seriousness of the issue. Rules and regulations are made, solutions are sought on how to fight and protect the rights of these children and to provide better quality education and health facilities to child labour.

Theme of World Day Against Child Labour 2020-

The theme of World Day Against Child Labour 2020 focuses on the impact of crisis on child labour. The theme for 2020 is “Covid 19 – Protect Children from Child Labour, now more than ever!” This pandemic and the resulting economic and labour market shock are having a massive impact on people’s lives and livelihoods. Unluckily, children are going to suffer the most. The crisis is going to push millions of vulnerable children to clutches of Labour employees. These children now have to work even in worst conditions and for longer hours.

This is the time when we have to join hands together to eradicate this evil situation which feeds on our innocent children, it will continue to plague our community. This is the time to show humanity. Pledge that we will never let any children practice child labour. We will safeguard their childhood and provide them with a chance to dream big.

“Life of Little ones are destroyed, when child labour is employed.”

SONU SOOD :- MESSIAH FOR MIGRANT WORKERS

undefined

Sonu Sood a well known actor who is usually known for playing the role of villain in his films is now being haled as a superhero for all the relief work he is doing voluntarily for migrant workers. The villain from famous movie Dabangg has now turned up into a ‘Messiah’. Yes, Messiah for those migrant workers who are worst affected due to this Covid – 19 induced lockdown. These migrant workers had lost their jobs, all their savings had exhausted and had no food to eat. They were depressed and hopeless so the only option left with them was to walk 1000 Kms to reach their native places. In such a hopeless situation Sonu Sood volunteered to help 1000’s of migrant workers in Mumbai return their homes.

How Sonu helped Migrant Workers?

Sonu started his relief work for the first time in March with his childhood friend Niti Goel. They firstly distributed 500 packets of cooked meals and groceries to migrant workers. Then soon he got to know that migrants were leaving Mumbai. He saw migrants walking on highway, risking their lives to reach their homes. He then decided someone should come forward and do something. In an interview he quoted ‘Migrant workers have helped build our houses, roads and offices. We cannot stand and watch them homeless. These are important people of our country’.

He spoke to a lot of people from ground to top level got all permissions, be it from police or medical department. After all the required paperwork he arranged first batch of10 buses for 350 migrant workers to help them reach their homes in Karnataka. He then helped nearly 160 migrant women workers of Odisha by arranging a chartered flight for them and paying for flight tickets. They had to go Bhubaneshwar from Kochi.

This did not ended here. The whole wave started when people from different states started approaching him in large numbers and they would cry. His cell phone was flooded with calls and messages. He with the help of his team even launched a helpline number so that people could easily contact him. He till now has sent 20000 workers to their hometown in different states in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan by arranging buses, trains and flights. His team each day is also providing food and water to at least 45000 workers. He has even given the rooms of his personal hotel in Mumbai to the doctors who were examining these migrant workers. Really, he in true sense is a Messiah for all of us. Hats off to this man for his honest and pure efforts.

What motivated him help Migrant Workers?

When asked in an interview by various news channels why he helped the workers he only said that it was out of love and he strongly feels about them. He said that he came to Mumbai as a migrant. One day he boarded a train and landed up here. As a migrant he has seen the worst times in his initial days when he had to sleep between two coaches in front of toilets. With very little money and huge dreams in his eyes it was very difficult for him to survive in a city like Mumbai. His own journey and struggle motivated him to help the migrant workers. He said that he will not stop here. ‘He will work till the last migrant reaches home. No one should be rendered homeless’.

His philanthropic work needs to be applauded. More importantly credits should be given to his parents Shakti and Saroj Sood for inspiring him in his humanitarian efforts. We should learn the true meaning of humanity from this person. At our individual level we should do something to help people like cooking an extra meal for someone, giving some clean space to live to our maids or may be watchman. Thus ensuring that noone in our country sleeps hungry or stays homeless.

POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING

Positive thinking is a word we have heard several times and we always advice others to think positive. If someone is upset or worried very lovingly we put our arm across their shoulders and ask to think positive. It is a word we believe in and want to live in. But have we ever thought what is positive thinking?

What is Positive thinking?

Positive thinking is a mental attitude in which you expect good and favourable results. It is the process of creating thoughts that create and transform energy into reality. A positive mind waits for happiness, health and a happy ending in every situation.

So the question now arises why we feel negative or are negative thoughts wrong?

The answer to this question is that like positive thoughts a person may get negative thoughts too. It is a natural process. Being negative for a minute is not wrong as it is natural but being negative all the time is wrong because it gives you mental stress as well as distracts you from your goal.

What are Negative Thoughts?

Negative thoughts can be in the form of fear or worry. Blaming or belittling someone, feeling jealous, comparing with someone, feeling hurt about what someone said, feeling resentful about someone all comes under negative thoughts. So any thought which disturbs your state of mind, makes you feel uncomfortable is negative thought.

Now if being negative is not at all good for health so how to stay positive every time? Here are the few tips I have mentioned which will definitely help you to stay positive.

Tips to stay Positive

1) Don’t take other people’s negativity personally.

2) Use positive words while talking.

3) Accept yourself the way you are.

4) Always think one day you will achieve your goal.

5) Think failure is an opportunity.

6) Try to smile in every situation.

7) Try to forgive people.

8) Change the way you think.

9) Always focus on solutions rather than getting into problems.

10) Love whoever is around to be loved.

11) Try to spread happiness around yourself

12) Be the positivity you want to see in the world.

13) Spend more time with positive people.

14) Meditate for 10 minutes every day.

15) Follow your passion.

Benefits of staying positive

1) It reduces stress.

2) Increases our Confidence.

3) Helps to focus on our goal.

4) Helps to make more friends.

5) Helps to live a longer life.

6) Improves our management skills.

7) Improves our decision making power.

These were the tips and benefits of staying positive.

We need to learn to subtract negativity from our life. Every time you subtract negative from your life, you make new room for more positivity. People who are able to discern the positive points in negative situations are the one’s who prosper in long run. So defend yourself against the ‘ negative way’ and make room for a positive day. Realise that life is a series of ups and downs. Concentrate on today. Let go and move on when you must.

Don’t forget –

“What you live today is the result of your yesterday’s thoughts, and what you will live tomorrow is the result of your today’s thoughts. ”

After leaving the coaching institute he also worked in BSNL but for a short span of time as he was determined to join civil services. So he left his job. But the problem was that he was not able to concentrate on studies because he was not interested in that. But he didn’t lose hope. He was positive and determined about his decision. So initially he started off by studying only for few hours 1-2. Later when he developed his interest in studies he studied continuously for 12 hours. Just imagine an average student studying for 12-14 hours.

The time came when he filled UPSC form and was at the edge of his preparation fully determined to crack the exam. But one day he met with an accident and got some severe injuries. He was bedridden for 8 months. But that average student still didn’t lose hope. He studied for several hours in the hospital. His journey was not at all easy. After facing continuous failures for 8 times he finally cracked the exam in the year 2018. That average student gained 32th rank in the examination. His hard work was paid off and he finally achieved his goal.

His story in true sense is an inspiration for all the average students who think only high scorer students can crack competitive exams. No this is not at all true. Anybody can crack any competitive exam but the need is of having a positive approach towards your goal and a little faith in yourself.

It’s Never Too Late To Live Your dreams

We always hear that it’s never too late to live our dreams and there’s no better example than Chandigarh resident Harbhajan Kaur who in true sense living her dreams. She’s indeed an inspiration to all the procrastinators. Her journey aptly defines that age is just a number and where there is will you will definitely find your way.

So let’s take a look at her tasteful journey of passion:

It all started in 2016,when one day Harbhajan’s daughter Raveena Suri asked if she had any regrets in her life to which she sadly expressed of not being able to earn a single penny over these years. This pinched Raveena lot. Aware of her mother’s cooking capabilities she now decided to motivate her and showed her the direction towards a new beginning. She asked her to make and sell her signature ‘Besan ki Barfi’ which over the years was only relished by family members.

So one day they both visited sector-18 to sell their sweet and it was very much liked by people and at the end of the day Harbhajan Kaur for the first time earned an amount of ₹2000. But what started as a weekend startup soon became on orders only enterprise. This was the time when Harbhajan Kaur was living her dream. Soon their idea took its final shape and she started selling barfis under brand name Harbhajan’s with the tagline “Bachpan Yaad Aajayega” (you’ll remember your childhood). The most interesting thing about her is that she herself manages everything on her own from roasting gram flour to cutting the perfectly shaped barfis. Her barfis are made only on orders and people collect the freshly made barfis at her residence.

Her hard work soon received plaudits when she trended on Internet after a tweet made by Anand Mahindra. He tweeted “When you hear the word ‘start-up’ it brings to mind images of millennials in Silicon Valley or Bengaluru trying to build billion dollar ‘unicorns’. From now on let’s also include a 94 year old woman who doesn’t think it’s too late to do a start – up. She’s my entrepreneur of the year.”

So now what are your views about this inspirational story? Don’t you think if she can then why not you? Wake up smell your dreams and start working to achieve them. Don’t be hesitant, don’t think about society or anyone else thinking “log Kya kahenge”. Just let it happen and feel the change.
